Mode of Action

IRAC1B

Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitor

Trichlorfon irreversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the enzyme responsible for breaking down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in insect synapses. Inhibition causes acetylcholine accumulation at nerve junctions, leading to continuous nerve stimulation, overstimulation of muscles and glands, convulsions, and death. Trichlorfon undergoes in vivo conversion to dichlorvos (DDVP), which contributes to its activity.

Resistance Management

Medium resistance risk. Organophosphate resistance via esterase-based detoxification is well documented in many insects. Trichlorfon is best used as a curative rescue treatment rather than a primary preventive program.
